About School Tours
The School Tours program gives young students and their teachers the opportunity to learn about the past and present methods of agriculture. School Tours are offered to students in Kindergarten through third grade attending public, private and home schools.
High School aged students of the 4-H, FFA and FCCLA organizations from South Texas are invited each year to serve as Tour Guides for this committee. Tour Guides assist in educating the students about agriculture and its valued importance, while sharpening their leadership and responsibility skills. Tours last 2 to 2-1/2 hours.
During the tour, students will visit a number of areas where they can view exhibits and demonstrations. Animal Adventures and the horse center are just a couple of the areas students will visit to learn more about agriculture through interactive hand-ons displays and view live farm animals that include: cattle, swine, sheep, goat, poultry and horses. The tour also visit the Family Fair area of the grounds. This area has additional exhibits, live entertainment and petting zoos.
Touring schools arrive either by buses or private cars starting at 8:00 a.m. Our committee will gladly get you started on your Field Trip/Tour day. All buses and private cars need to enter the grounds through Gate A (West Gate) off Houston Street. Vehicles will be directed to the loading/unloading zone. Once the children are unloaded and escorted into the grounds, committee members will unload labeled boxes that carry the lunches for the children. The labels need to have both the name of the school and class teacher. Lunches will not be allowed to remain on the buses.
The School Tours Committee welcomes all classes to eat lunch in the tent starting at 11:30 a.m. All of the boxed lunches unloaded earlier that morning will be stored on the stage inside the tent. Committee Members will hand out the lunches to each class upon request. If the tent is full, classes can wait for the next available table inside the tent or take advantage of using the picnic tables scattered throughout the grounds (weather permitting).
All Touring Schools and Tour Guide reservations are taken on a first come/first serve basis for participation in our program. Home schools, public and private schools that are not taking part in our program are still welcomed to attend and visit the grounds. These groups can enter through the School Tours area and our committee will assist them as needed for loading/unloading and entrance into the grounds. A entry fee will be required for all Non-Touring Schools. Contact (210) 225-5851 for admission prices.
School Tours will be held on the days established regardless of weather, unless otherwise notified.
